Practical self-defence built on deflection, positioning and strategy rather than size or strength.

The techniques taught at the Mornington academy are simple and effective. Co-ed classes give women opportunities to practise with training partners of different sizes and experience levels, developing confidence, awareness and practical skills.
Wing Chun uses body mechanics to disrupt balance. Its emphasis on deflection, positioning and strategy makes the system practical while also being considerate of the joints and body.
Training can support fitness, stress relief, confidence, coordination, speed and power. The academy also offers private instruction for women who prefer focused one-to-one training.
Unlike many martial arts, Wing Chun has a remarkable story at its origins. According to traditional accounts, it was developed by Ng Mui, a Buddhist nun and martial arts practitioner who sought an effective approach to self-defence that did not depend on superior size or physical strength.
That philosophy remains central to Wing Chun today. Rather than relying on brute force, students learn to use positioning, balance, timing and efficient movement to develop practical self-defence skills.
For women, Wing Chun offers an opportunity to build confidence, improve coordination and fitness, and learn useful techniques in a welcoming and supportive training environment. Visitors interested in the traditional account and its historical context can read more about the origins of Wing Chun.
